Locals since the 1970s, while bathed in wastewater from the geothermal plant, noticed that water, rich in salts, Blue Green Algae, sulfur and silicon white, helps with skin diseases. Thus, fields of lava around the geothermal plant in Svartsengi, accidentally became a popular spa resort.
In 1992 it created Blue Lagoon thermal spa, which today is one of the most popular attractions in Iceland.
